Beginning of the Year Art Projects

Our year is off to a great start! Students began the year with learning about art room rules and procedures, and created a portfolio to store all of their artwork for the year.  Students will take their portfolio home near the end of the year in May.

3rd Graders have learned about the elements and principles of art including line, shape, texture and pattern. They used cardboard, yarn and sharpie markers to create beautiful relief art.

4th Graders have been busy learning about hip-hop style and are creating their unique names with a hip-hop twist.  They are learning about shading and are being creating with lettering.  They will be coloring these in next week!

2nd Graders are learning about line, shape and pattern and the artist Romero Britto.  They are creating pumpkin paintings that will emphasize pattern and design.

1st Graders have been creating cardboard shape collages.  They have learned about different shapes and have used their imaginations to create an original collage.  Students have learned about the artist Louise Nevelson.

Kindergartens have been busy learning about shapes and a variety of media that we'll use in art class. They have been creating robot shape collages and have used glue, paper, oil pastels, and paint.

Welcome to Art Class - A New School Year

Welcome to the the Smithland art studio! The art room is a space where your child will be creative, problem-solve, learn about art media, artists and apply various techniques to their own artwork throughout the year.  Projects throughout the year are based around themes, cultures and the elements of art.  We follow the Virginia Standards of Learning for Visual Arts and these are apparent within each lesson.  I look forward to working with your child again this year! If you are new this year to Smithland I can't wait to meet you and your child!  If you have any questions about our art program please feel free to contact me.  sritter@harrisonburg.k12.va.us

The Smithland Elementary Art Show

We had a great turn out for our K-4th grade art show to celebrate Youth Art Month!  Every child had one piece of artwork displayed from art class this year.  A collaborative circle painting was also on display that was made by several grade levels during March.  Thank you also to our PTO who provided a collaborative artwork for students during the art show and refreshments.
