Kindergarten Lunch Tray Art

Our student teacher, Ms. Prather, has been teaching the kindergarteners about health eating habits.  On the first day of this project they discussed why it is important to eat healthy and talked about some examples of healthy food.  The students painted random prints using healthy fruits and vegetables.
They were ecouraged to overlap the prints and even go off of the page with the vegetable of fruit.  The students had a lot of fun painting with food!
On the second day of the lesson, the students review what they had painted with last week and talked more about different types of healthy foods.  Ms Prather then showed them how to trace squares on the back of their painted paper and glue them onto a background paper to create a lunch tray.  When they were finished they drew silverware on the side.

The Newcomer Class and "All About Me" Books

Today our student teacher, Ms. Prather, taught the Newcomer class how to create a book using the paper they made last week.  They wrote the title of their book on the front page: All About Me.  After that, they drew their favorite things on the pages and wrote what that was on the opposite page.  They drew and colored using oil pastels.  After their drawings were complete, they used yarn to attach all the pages on the corners.

Last week the students had fun creating the paper.  It was a messy procedure, but well worth it!  Ms Prather made paper pulp ahead of time with paper scraps we saved in the art room.  After the demonstration the students were off to their stations.  They worked together, 2 at a station, to make 1-2 pieces of paper of each color.

2nd Grade Symbolic Coins

On the first day of this project our student teacher, Ms. Prather, taught the 2nd graders about coins and symbols. The students brainstormed ideas for their coins on a worksheet by writing four things that they liked to do for fun or something about themselves. After writing their ideas down, they drew a picture of something that could symbolize each thing they wrote. The next step was to cut out their favorite image and transfer the drawing onto a styrofoam printing plate. They did this very carefully by tracing their lines with a dull pencil with the paper on top of the plate.
On the second day, the students learned about clay and transfered their image from the plate onto the clay. They first created a slab of clay by punding and rolling the clay to the thickness of their finger. Then, they traced their printing plate three times and cut them out to create the coins. Finally, the students pressed and rubbed the printing plate into the clay to create an impression of their symbol.
The coins are now in the kiln to be fired. Next week the students will paint them and trade some with other students in the class!

1st Grade Community Quilts

Our Student teacher, Ms Prather, has taught our first graders about quilts and communities. They are working hard to finish their quilt squares this week. They drew themselves as a community member with a specifc job. After finishing their portrait they glued it onto a background paper and created a patterned border using shapes.

Murals created by Blast Off! Students

The students in the Blast Off! after school program worked collaboratively to create these murals. They look beautiful on our art room windows.
